Apology for absence

I'm sorry I wasn't able to resume blogging on September 3rd as planned. Nor can I do so now.

The reason is that the on/off button on my Hewlett Packard laptop ceased to function. I assumed that it could be repaired at the local shop where I bought it less than a year ago. But apparently HP do not allow their agents to stock parts, so it had to be returned to the factory and when it will be returned is uncertain.

Meanwhile I have been thinking about buying another laptop but can't make up my mind which make to invest in. I've had two Dells. On the last one the screen died, but the works were still functioning when plugged in to an old desktop monitor. Unfortunately, after the HP catastrophe, this state of affairs lasted only a few days and now the Dell laptop also appears to be defunct.

I'm writing this on someone else's laptop. Some marvellous books arrived last month, but when I'll be able to praise them...who knows?

For someone who spends as much time online as I do normally, it's an interesting experience to be forced offline for a while.

  1. Looking forward to your return and hearing about all the books. I know nothing about computers so I cannot advise you about what to buy.

  2. Good luck with getting it fixed. It's a frustrating dilemma being pc-less.

  3. Good to hear of you again, Anne. I was starting to wonder what had happened

  4. The good thing about Dell in my experience is their after-sales service. Of course, whether this works half-way up a Spanish mountain...

  5. Anne, the boy wonder recommends either the Sony Via, or the IBM Thinkpad T61 which comes in various sizes. (He uses the Thinkpad himself.)

    Hope you're back online soon.

I don't know anything abotu Dell but buy all electronic equipment from John Lewis, they are marvellous if there are problems

  7. I had the Great Computer Disaster to cope with last year. My brand new laptop went bust within ten months and had to send it away to Scotland or the Outer Hebrides or some such place to have it repaired. I now have a back up computer, which sounds terribly grand, but it was a very cheap laptop from PC World and it worked, so it is now tucked away in a cupboard ready for the next crash.

  9. Good to see you back, even if temporarily.

Much sympathy with the hardware problem. I am still finding errors that happened when my 4 year old Dell desktop started crashing after Christmas.

Look forward to hearing about the books as and when.

  11. Very, very sorry to hear of the deat of Anne Weale, Bookworm on the Net, on 24th October.

Her astringent views and wide interests have been a constant source of delight to me for many years.

  12. I too am very sorry to learn of Anne Weale's death.

She was a woman of immense style and rigorous thinking, never afraid to post her views and then argue her corner.

She also had a dry sense of humour and, in person, great charm. She once told me that for any moderately intelligent person with libraries, the telephone and the Internet readily available, there was no excuse for sloppy writing. "Write it once - and get it right," she said.

Rest in peace, Anne. You will be greatly missed.

  15. I'm sorry to read this sad news.

I picked up a copy of Sullivan's Reef when I was a teenager, and I've been reading Anne's books ever since. It was such a delight to be able to correspond with her and to read her blog.

I send my sincere sympathy to her family. She will be missed by many.

  16. I'm truly sorry to hear that Anne Weale has died. She has been a
force in romance writing and publishing for almost longer than I have
been alive and she will be much missed.

As well as her creative abilities, she had a sharp, incisive mind and a zest for life that I always totally admired. We had many arguments but I always enjoyed denating with her.

I send my deepest sympathies to her family.

  17. I too was very sad to hear of Anne Weale's death.

Her books were some of the first that I read in the romance genre and helped inspire my love of romance.

Ther was much to admire about Anne Weale and her dedication to the genre and to publishing in general. her interests were wide ranging and never boring. She was truly one of a kind, a legend, and will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to her family.

  18. The news of Anne's death is both shocking and a great sadness.

I will not repeat what others have said, because they have said it so well, but I would just like to add that six years ago, when I was very seriously ill, she was most wonderfully kind and supportive. At that time and after, we enjoyed some occasional lively correspondence.

    Sincere sympathy to her family.

  24. I met Anne only briefly and felt it was such an honour to on that first occassion. She was one of the strongest minded women I've ever met and I will never forget her outward elegance and grace or her strength of character and the fantastic legacy she helped hand down to the generations of writers who could only hope to follow in her footsteps. It saddens me greatly that approaching the Mills & Boon Centenery a woman who was there in the golden age of the company is not around to share the personal stories that made it so magical to us.

I enjoyed the debates Anne and that you made me think so much about why writing really matters. I'll also miss popping by here to discover books I would probably never have found alone. I guess the best way to say thanks for that will be to continue looking and read, read and read some more...

Once met, never forgotten is how I feel. I know I certainly won't forget you. And the fact that your books are always there for readers to enjoy is a wonderful gift to leave behind...

    Safe journey Anne.

  25. Anne's presence in the writing community and the wit and intelligence she brought to all her endeavors will be deeply missed. And I will miss her as a colleague and a friend. She was one-of-a-kind.

My thoughts and sympathy are with all her family.

  26. Like Trish I feel so sad Anne won't be here to help us celebrate the Mills & Boon Centenery next year.

I met Anne at my very first Mills & Boon author luncheon and found her an absolutely delightful table companion. She will be sorely missed by many.

    Much love to her family.

  27. I have loved Anne's work since the 60's when I discovered romance as a young person. I struck up a minor correspondence with her in 2000 when I discovered her internet address. She was so gracious and kind in her responses to me - I fairly gushed and was relieved that she was pleased to hear my praise. She encouraged me to find her Longwarden books and I did find them, read them, and "reported" back to her about how much I loved them. I have kept both the books and her emails. I am sad to hear of her death - she was a treasure.

    My condolences to her family.

  28. Anne Weale was one of the first romance authors I read in the 70s. I remember her books fondly and am saddened to hear that she has passed away.

The romance family has lost one of its stars. My condolences to Ms. Weale's family. She will be missed.

  29. I was really shocked and saddened to hear of Anne's death. She was very generous and welcoming to me as a new author, and we exchanged some wonderful emails, as well as some robust and entertaining exchanges. I was impressed by the way she embraced the web and her many references to interesting sites and articles. I can't quite believe she's gone.

My sympathy to her husband and family, of whom she was transparently and utterly proud.
    Vale Jay.

  30. I was coincidentally reading one of Anne's books when I heard of her death. Her intelligence and her personality come through on every page and make it a delight to read. I have also enjoyed this blog and it has prompted me to look at books I may never have done otherwise. When we met in person, Anne was charming and kind. I'm sorry she is gone.

  31. I only just learned of Anne's death when tuning in to see if she had posted anything new on her blog of late. Such a sad piece of news and a true loss. I have really relished our email conversations in the past couple of years which all stemmed from her calling me a 'young upstart' when I passed comment on Mary Stewart a couple of years ago. Anyone who calls me 'young' always wins my instant devotion - and I shall miss her thoughts and comments enormously. :(

    My condolences.

And now that they have engaged the outside world it is sort of time for me to. And I hope I will have the kind of energy that allows me to get back to doing some of the things I enjoy. Like writing occasionally for this blog. About less important things like the disappearance of tab collars and , now that the warmer weather is here, the ghastly re-appearance of cargo pants. Or buying an umbrella.
